A virtual machine is a program that allows you to simulate a different operating system (like an emulator) and will allow you to run programs or apps from the different operating system without rebooting your computer. For example on a mac, normally, you would need to restart and boot into windows to run a windows program. Using a virtual machine like Virtual Box, you can simply start running windows programs at the same time you are running your mac in the background.
